Blog 7 - Copying an Existing Video

As an extra lesson in the week we are taught by a music video producer, here we have been taught how to use the camera and various aspects of it, as well as working in groups to produce our own version of the famous music video Teenage Dirtbag. In our first lesson we were taught how to use the camera, from turning the camera on and working right through every detail. We were taught/reminded of the various angles/movements you could use and also when each one would be used. We were told how for Health and Safety reasons to mount the camera onto the tri-pod for more steady shots. We were taught about White Balance and the 4 different settings; - Automatic White Balance (AMB) - Which can prove unreliable - Indoor Setting - Picture of a lightbulb - Outdoor Setting - Picture of a sun - Manual Setting Exposure; - Shutter speed - 1/12, 1/50 & 1/1000 - (This is the fastest) How to use the controls; - - Use controls to select setting - Bottom button = Shutter Speed During the next few lessons we worked in groups to recreate the whole of the Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag video so each group was given a number of shots to reproduce and each member took it in turns to use the camera etc. We had a main character who had about 5 extras included in each shot. During this time we were able to get a better understanding of how each piece of equipment works and also we were able to experiment what works in the video and what doesn't so that we could produce the video to the best of our ability. After we had finished filming our scenes, in our next lesson we were taught how to begin editing the clips we had made using Final Cut Pro, we were taught how to connect the camera to the computer using the FIREWIRE then changing the setting so it was on VCR/playback so the computer was able to recognise the camera connection. We discussed what format the PAL should be set to in this country, which we established was 24 frames per second. During this lesson we were also told about 'Scratch Disc' and what it is used for, the destination of all captured footage. As well as learning how to capture back the video and also learning that we coukd control the camera by the computer using the 'device control'. Now that the shots were captured on the laptops we then had to edit them, as there were many takes of each shot we had to do we had to distinguish which shots were the good shots and those that weren't so good, using a 'razor tool' on this particular programme we could select the slot of time that was of good work, so this was moved onto another track- track 2 -seperate to that of the whole video, once all the good shots were seperate to the rest we were then able to delete the poor shots we had captured. This is known as the 'Assembly Edit'. Here is our group video of the re-production of Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag; http://bb.sdc.ac.uk/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab_id=_2_1&url=%2Fwebapps%2Fblackboard%2Fexecute%2Flauncher%3Ftype%3DCourse%26id%3D_654_1%26url%3D We also experimented with Timelapse, to show certain ways of the editing that we could do/achieve; http://bb.sdc.ac.uk/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab_id=_2_1&url=%2Fwebapps%2Fblackboard%2Fexecute%2Flauncher%3Ftype%3DCourse%26id%3D_654_1%26url%3D
